Native Americans Go Viral With Web Protest of Celebrities in War Bonnets
Native Americans all over the wold are becoming more bothered by the fact that non-Native
Americans are wearing headdresses and war bonnets. Mainly, because they say they did nothing to earn it. Or maybe, is it because technology has become more prominent and needed to communicate? Peoples in the Native American culture have always seen a headdress or war bonnet as a symbol of honor. Much like the military is seen in the American culture. A headdress to them is much like an award or high rank given in the Military. This all started when Pharrell Williams war a stylish headdress and outfit much like the Native Americans for an event. They became upset, and wanted to be heard.
I personally think this isn't a bad thing. Probably insulting, I would agree. But I think the American celebrities aren't trying to disrespect. We should honor them just as they honor us. Yes, it is a very beautiful and very stylish culture, but that doesn't mean to disrespect. But, at the same time, the Americans who genuinely mean no disrespect are coming across as disrespectful, because that isn't their own culture. It is wrong of Americans to do that. They don't pretend to put on Navy uniforms, or Army, or Coast Guard. They mean no disrespect. But, I can see where they would think that we are disrespecting them. I understand, and I do think that they have always felt this way about this sort of thing. I just feel like, because we have more technology and ways of communicating, they have just now found a way of being heard.
